Emergency Dentistry Q & A

What is emergency dentistry?

Emergency dentistry is dental care for situations that require immediate and urgent attention. A good emergency dentist has to be more than just skilled in dental treatments — they must be able to perform in high-stress situations and remain calm and collected. The team of professionals at Palmetto Family Dental is highly skilled in treating dental emergencies and will do everything they can to accommodate your needs.

Whether you’ve experienced a sports injury or simply bit down on something wrong, Palmetto Family Dental can expertly treat your teeth, maintain your oral health, and keep your smile looking stunning.

What constitutes a dental emergency?

Dental emergencies come in all different shapes and sizes, but some of the more common situations include:

  • Physical trauma to the tooth, like a crack, chip, or break
  • Knocked-out tooth
  • Laceration on your lips, cheeks, gums, or tongue
  • Severe toothache
  • Abscess on your gums
  • Bleeding from the mouth

If you’re suffering from any of these conditions, make your way to the nearest Palmetto Family Dental clinic immediately. In some cases, getting treatment within 30 minutes of your emergency could mean the difference between saving and losing your tooth.

If you’re dealing with a different condition and are unsure if it’s an emergency, call the office to speak with one of the friendly team members. They can help you determine if you should come in for emergency treatment.

What should I do if I’ve knocked out a tooth?

If you’ve knocked out your tooth entirely, you need to be seen by the team at Palmetto Family Dental. Before you come in, however, there are a few measures that you can take to increase the likelihood of saving your tooth.

First, try to locate your knocked-out tooth and rinse it under lukewarm water. Make sure to only hold the tooth by its crown and avoid touching its roots. Rinse your mouth with lukewarm water as well, and try to reinsert the tooth into its empty socket. If you can successfully get the tooth back in, bite down on it gently to hold it in place until you arrive at Palmetto Family Dental.

If you can’t reinsert the tooth, you can keep it from drying out by holding it in the side of your mouth or putting it in a glass full of milk or saliva.
